President Clinton Receives Audience
With A Nicholson!

(Summer 1999)

In August of this year, my brother Marv spent his summer in Nantucket working as a caddy at the Nantucket Golf Club. One of the highlights (OK, the only one I can tell you about) was the opportunity to caddy for President Clinton. (Feel free to drop the President a line to let him know how lucky he was!)

Marv's an avid golfer and hits the ball a ton. Last year, we played Baltusrol (a course outside New York City that has been the home of several US Opens) where I watched him rip a drive about 370 yards off the first tee! That would also be the same day I watched him tear the head off his Biggest Big Bertha while pounding several of Baltusrol's range balls into a forest (about 300 yards from the tee). Personally I think Callaway should be calling Marv to torture test their drivers. After all, I think he's broken about 6 of them so far.

On with our story, Marv left the friendly confines of Vancouver Island for the east coast, last December. After freezing his butt off in Boston over the winter, Marv moved to Nantucket to live a storied life. He luckily landed a job at the Nantucket Golf Club - one of the most exclusive clubs in the States. Renowned for his ability to make anyone feel at home, Marv made many new friends at the course and on one special occasion President William Jefferson Clinton was granted an audience with "His Caddyness."

Talk about a highlight - I got a voice mail message from Marv a couple days before, saying that he had some really great news, but couldn't leave the details, because "you never know who's listening..." Turns out he had to pass an FBI check before his presidential assignment. I'm still not sure what amazes me more - the fact that he actually got the opportunity to caddy for the president, or the fact that he actually passed an FBI check!!!

The day was a great success, Clinton and the First Lady flew into Nantucket from Martha's Vineyard (he was on vacation don't ya know...) and while the First Lady did some campaigning, the President teed it up on the Rees Jones designed course.

Marv still makes no mention of the President's score, but insists that they had a super day. You have to think that with the masses of Secret Service people working the course, the odds were against the President loosing many golf balls.

Marv's left Nantucket for the season and is off to a more southern climate. He has started a new caddying job at the Augusta National Golf Club (home of The Masters.) But that's another story.
